The district of Kreuzberg is the centre of alternative Berlin. It was here that the student movement became active in the late sixties and challenged the political status quo. Kreuzberg subsequently turned into a haven for people who wanted to escape the drudgery of mainstream consumerism. In the 1980s, it had quite a reputation for the riots which happened there every year. Things have calmed down since then but the area still has a distinct flavour of its own ... little shops selling unusual items, graffiti everywhere, street artists, music, bars & cafés, kebab shops and unconventional galleries.
